How It All Began…

Born October 30, 1980 in a small town in Mississippi, Marvin Williams grew up with an uncanny ability to be very creative in figuring out how to accomplish tasks. Being the youngest of 3 siblings, he had to create his own entertainment. Whether it was disassembling and reassembling broken household items or creating toys from recyclables, his creativity constantly exercised his imagination and bility to figure out things.

After entering adulthood, he eventually found a love in building things. He purchased a circular saw, power drill, and jig saw from a local pawn shop to begin his newly found hobby. He would find used and salvaged lumber to build mostly dog houses. Whether it was free pallets or discounted warped lumber, he would take advantage of it to build something nice from something no one else wants.

Eventually, his life took a shift that lead him to move to Texas. He never thought he would relocate from the country to the city, but he found out why God lead him to such a different territory. Better opportunities lead to him replacing his worn and basic tools for new and better quality tools. He eventually acquired space to designate as a workshop and improved his woodworking craft. Friends would ask could he build certain products, and after a long pause to observe the request, his response would be “Sure, I can do that. “ There were times he would doubt his ability, but his acceptance of a challenge encouraged his response to be “I can do that. “

One request proved to be the turning point in his passion for woodworking, as his doubt was stronger than ever. His neighbor requested a kitchen island to replace the outdated one in her kitchen. Plus, she left it up to him to design. He courageously pushed away all doubt, and replied “I can do that.”

He spent time carefully preparing for this project, and finally began his journey. After applying the final coat of Clear Gloss Polyurethane, Marvin walked around his FINISHED creation several times, peering at the reflection as the shop light glistened off the clear coated butcher block top. Struck with amusement, he stared at the pristine corners and designs that proved to have been accomplished by someone with patience and a love for the craft of woodworking. With such a feeling of joy and excited, he paused for a moment, and said to himself “I did that.”

The thought of starting a business quickly ensued in his mind, and “ICanDoThat” quickly followed as the name, to serve as a statement of motivation and inspiration not only for himself, but for others.
